As I headed over to worth1000.com I noticed something different, they now have contests! What a great idea! Except for the fact I hate them. Why, you ask? Because there is only one guaranteed winner and the prize is often way too far under the value of the product. Sitepoint has a similar deal going, cheap companies looking for people to offer their services for a crummy cash prize.
What I hate to see is the amount people who enter these things and spend hours coming up with a logo or design, and get absolutely nothing for it. There’s no guarantee you’ll get anything, and there’s also a chance the contest creator will take off with the entries and use them without you knowing, and you end up with nothing. Sure, they’re a good idea if you have A LOT of free time to waste, or can come up with something amazing in 20 min. but, when I was at Sitepoint entering contests I was staying up late and spending countless hours tweaking my designs and logos for the “client” (which can be seen by all). What ends up happening? Someone swoops in at the end and uses the critiques of my logo (and others) to create the “perfect” logo. They win. You’re welcome for the help. Now, where’s my cut of the hours and work I did? Gah.
Don’t get me wrong, worth1000.com has a lot of amazingly talented people on there, but the fact that they support cheap, under paying companies/clients is beyond me. Perhaps for some winners it works out and they end up winning a contest that only took them 45 min. to do beginning to end, but I doubt it.
