Wow, been awhile since I wrote one of these!

Tonight was a rough night, lots of snow and wind, and not a plow or snow truck to be seen. The roads were terrible, even in town I could barely get enough traction to move. It took me about an hour to dig myself out of my own driveway before going to work (was 1/2 hour late for work). On my first delivery I got stuck a couple times on the same road because the snow was so deep and there was ice underneath the snow. It was freezing rain before it started snowing…so, freezing rain = ice, ice + deep snow/unplowed roads = not fun driving. Every time I stopped I would be stuck and it would take awhile and lots of RPMs to get going again.

After several deliveries I decided enough was enough. It wasn’t worth killing myself or blowing my engine just so someone can have a pizza, especially when those people were giving me crummy tips. I was able to get myself out of everything but this one time I needed some help. As I was going to this one house I got stuck when I backed out of someone’s driveway to turn around. A guy driving by stopped and had tried to push and bounce my car while I accelerated but it wasn’t getting me anywhere. He took off so I grabbed my gloves and started digging myself out with my hands, and killing my back and everything else at the same time by pushing the car myself. I would have to get down, dig out more snow, get in, rock forward and back, get out, dig more snow out, push, and repeat.

I had called her and said that I was stuck and would be a bit, as I was just up the road I asked if she wanted to come get it while I try and get my car out (didn’t want to leave my car), her response, “Well, I don’t really want to go anywhere.” Hmm….of course. It’s not like they had already driven to the store to order and pay for the food or anything (/sarcasm).

Eventually two younger guys driving by had turned around and came to help push me out. Thanks guys! I almost got stuck soon after, but was able to force my self through the snow (barely). The crappy part is I KNEW I wasn’t going to get a tip. How do I know? I deliver there often and they never tip.

On a side note for those who don’t know, we DO NOT have a delivery charge, we offer free in town delivery. So they only thing I got out of it was guzzling up some gas trying to get out of the snow, and many miles off my engine. I pay for gas, insurance, and all repairs myself too.

Thanks for reading another Day in the Life of a Pizza Delivery Boy.
