Over at The Graphic Design Blog one of the latest articles written was Sample Design Brief for Students: New Battery Brand and Pack which featured a zip file of some Illustrator files and the design brief they had received. After looking at it I was like… wow that is a huge difference from what we receive in school. Our professors have always told us we are extremely lucky to be getting the briefs we get, in comparison with The Graphic Design Blog it’s very true.
So, what am I going to to do now? Well, I’m going to show one of the design briefs that we received in class of course! You can download my PDF brief here. Check out The Graphic Design Blog to download their file so you can compare the two.
Real World vs. Student Design Brief begins…
The first thing you’ll notice is that my brief is 3 pages long with tons of detail on what is required for the brochure. We are given the proper paper size, colour style, bleed amount, image resolution, and what programs are to be used. Below that it explains what is required on each flap of the brochure, and although this does limit us a little, it does makes it easier for the professor to mark in the end. It’s hard to mark creativity and this way we can be marked on how closely we follow the brief (give the “client” what they want ;))
The second page goes into more technical details on what is required for the final brochure, which includes photograph requirements, logos, typography, and final output settings.
The third page is a grading sheet broken down so we are able to see exactly what we’re getting marked on. This helps so we can double check we have included everything so we have a greater chance of a good mark :).
Well, there’s the example, and very brief description, of a student design brief (download the PDF brief here if you haven’t already) that my class had received.
Comparing it with The Graphic Design Blog brief it seems that real world clients expect you to know exactly what they want no matter how little they tell you. Of course that’s what college is preparing us for though with the detailed briefs. Well, that and I’m sure most (if not all) of the students would be totally lost with all of our projects since we are still learning and don’t know everything there is to know, as much as we think we do ;).
