Non-Designers Design Book Review

The Non-Designer’s Design Book (aff) (Second Edition) by Robin Williams is a great book that can help anyone learn the basics of graphic design. My sister had bought the book a while ago but never took it with her when she moved out. It was kind of a lost book in our house since well, I had forgotten about it but I wish I hadn’t. This edition of The Non-Designer’s Design Book focuses on “design and typographic principles for the visual novice.” The beginning of the book focuses on the four basic principles of design:

  • Proximity
  • Alignment
  • Repetition
  • Contrast

Then it leads into what you should be doing and what not to do providing great examples of both.
The Non-Designer’s Design Book gives some great tips on creating packages, business cards, flyers, websites, etc. At the end of the book Robin has you quizzing yourself on what you’ve learned and applying it to a little “test” she has created for you. This is a great idea since it gets you to think about what you’ve just read and apply it right away.

The book is meant to help the non-designers learn to design, but can also be used as reference material to make sure you’re doing things right. The book user level is rated at beginner and intermediate, his means that almost no knowledge is needed to read through this book. I highly recommend The Non-Designer’s Design Book; I’ve actually kept it beside my computer so I know where it is ;).
