As suggested by ilker of The Thinking Blog, I should extend the article Using Macromedia Flash to Create Cartoon Self and write up a tutorial on exactly what I had done.

The great thing about creating your own cartoon and drawings is that you can change or add whatever you like! Imagination is a great thing ;). In the tutorial though I’ll simply be redrawing my face.

Note: This was done using a mouse, not a Wacom tablet.

So, here it goes!

1.) Start off with any picture you like, in my case I will be using this picture of myself.

2.) In Flash create a new document then import your picture to the stage. File> Import> Import to Stage…

3.) The image will be placed on its own layer. If your image needs to be resized then you can do that, make sure to lock the image’s layer when you’re done.

4.) Create a new layer then grab the brush tool and select which size you would like to use.

Here’s the cool thing about the brush tool in Flash. The brush has a thing called “auto smoothing” which will automatically smooth the brush stroke that you make. Check my examples below, now isn’t that cool? Auto Smoothing is what creates the cartoon effect we’re going for.

Examples:

5.) I cannot help you with this next step since it’s up to you to decide what parts to draw, colours, brush size, etc. What I do suggest though is that everything should be on its very own layer. Also, remember you can zoom in for greater detail and to create thinner lines.

Here’s what my layer set-up looks like and the final image.
